Black As Night by Regina Doman | spoiler-free book review

" 'Who's the fairest in the land' games don't always end up so well."

Can we all agree that that is possibly the best synopsis EVER? Short, too the point, and catchy.
Black As Night is the second book in Regina Doman's A Fairy Tale Retold series. Each one can be read by itself, so you can technically read them in any order you want, as each is a retelling of a different fairy tale, but with the same characters. The first one, In the Shadow Of The Bear, was a retelling of Snow White and Rose Red. This one is a retelling of Snow White. Now I'm not going to really tell you anything other than that, because I think the best way to go into this book is without really knowing much and with no expectations whatsoever. I would suggest reading the books in order, though, because you get to know the characters better that way.

I really enjoyed this book. It was much better than the first book, which didn't really feel like a retelling of a fairy tale at all. This one took a couple chapters to get going, but once it did I honestly couldn't put it down! It was such a neat twist on Snow White, and to be honest, it's one of the best retellings of Snow White I've ever read. The writing was beautiful, the characters well developed. Not only is this a retelling, but it's also kind of a mystery novel too, so kudos to Regina for managing that! It was much darker than In The Shadow Of The Bear, which was more lighthearted. This book definitely deserves a 5/5 stars. I can't wait to read the next book, Waking Rose!
